Norman Walton Blystone, Mt. Pleasant, MI, Age 90, passed away Tuesday, May 23 2006 at Isabella County Medical Care Facility in Mount Pleasant, MI, following complications from prostate cancer. He was born May 26, 1915 in Herrick, MI, a son of Glen O. and Grace (Walton) Blystone. On August 9, 1941, he married Ruth Coles and they celebrated their sixty-third wedding anniversary shortly before her death in 2004. Mr. Blystone was a graduate of Clare High School, Class of 1933. In 1942, he received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Michigan. Norman served as a chief petty officer in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. After the war, he began a 33-year career with the Lansing Y.M.C.A. as Physical Director, and later, Associate General Director, reting in 1978. Mr. Blystone was a longtime member of the Central United Methodist Church, in Lansing. His hobbies included ballroom dancing, hunting, fishing, camping, gardening and spending time at his Lake Michigan cottage in Northport and winter home in Venice, Florida. Mr. Blystone is survived by his children, Elaine M. Piper of Jackson, MI and Glen D. (Kathy) Blystone of Mt. Pleasant, MI; five grandchildren, Joel and Mary Piper and Bart, Paul and Shane Blystone; one sister, Ruth Maser of Clare, MI; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Norris Blystone of Clare, MI and Ronald Blystone of Ypsilanti, MI. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 26, 2006 at 2 p.m. at the Clark Funeral Chapel, 114 S. Bradley, Mt. Pleasant, MI 48858, with the Rev. James Parker officiating. Burial will follow at the Cherry Grove Cemetery in Clare. Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. on Thursday, May 25, 2006, ant the funeral chapel.

Ruth (Coles) Blystone passed away Monday, October 25, 2004 at McLaren Regional Hospital in Flint, Michigan, following a brief illness. Ruth was born Dec. 3, 1912, in Ann Arbor, Michigan; daughter of Helena and Walter P. Coles. She married Norman W. Blystone of Clare, Michigan on Aug. 9, 1941. She is survived by her husband Norman, her children Elaine Piper of Jackson, Mich., and Glen (Kathy) Blystone of Mt. Pleasant, Mich., and her grandchildren, Joel and Mary Piper and Bart, Paul, and Shane Blystone. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Elnore (Ivan) Parker of Ann Arbor.
Ruth received her bachelor’s degree in Latin and her master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Michigan in 1939. She worked as a reference librarian for the Ann Arbor Public Library and the State Library of Michigan. After a career break to raise her family, she began work as an elementary school librarian for the Lansing School District, retiring in 1978. What she loved most about her work was reading to children and introducing them to the joy of reading and the love of books.
Ruth’s hobbies included traveling, ballroom dancing, music and singing in several choirs. She was active in the Central United Methodist Church of Lansing for many years, serving on various committees and participating in many activities within the church. Throughout her retirement, Ruth especially enjoyed spending her summers at the family cottage in Northport and the winter months at their vacation home in S. Venice, Fla. Ruth was a member of the S. Venice Florida Yacht Club and Elks Club and enjoyed the activities and friendships she established within those organizations.
